Alfalfa

Alfalfa is one of the most nutritionally complete foods, providing nutrients needed by dogs to sustain wellbeing. Alfalfa has also been shown to be a source of protein and rich source of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, manganese, phosphorus, iron, and zinc. TEA TREE OIL – MELALEUCA – USE WITH DOGS AND CATS

I advocate using tea tree oil for dog shampoo, particularly for larger breed dogs. When I use a tea tree oil shampoo it seems to keep the fleas and ticks away for several days after a bath.

With smaller dogs, miniature breeds like small poodles, Chihuahua's, and felines; you should avoid shampoos with concentrations of tea tree oil or other essential oils like menthol, in concentrations greater than 1%.

Cats and small dogs are highly at risk to central nervous system depressants (CNS depression) like some essential oils.

Never use directly tea tree oil, mint, or pennyroyal essential oils on any small animal.

Although some of these oils have proven themselves effective in repelling fleas and ticks, they can be dangerous or deadly to your small pets.

TICK SOLUTION

An Israeli company Mitam has developed a chemical-free, environmentally safe anti-tick spray that is safe for pets and farm animals. Based on 15 years of research at the Volcani Institute in Israel, Mitam's biological solution takes advantage of the fact that ticks do have natural enemies. One in particular is a naturally occurring fungus called Metarhizium anisopliae, which latches onto and consumes the protein exoskeleton of the tick, causing death.

Normally present in nature or in a cowshed in small amounts, Mitam has found a way to amplify the fungus's potency and supply it food, while it waits for a tick to jump into an animals' fur.

"It eats the tick, and there is no egg laying. This is one of our main achievements," Mitam's CEO Tzali Cnaani. What also makes it a plus for farmers and pet owners is that Mitam's spray can be applied either to the animal's habitat on the farm or at home, as well as on the animal directly.

No resistance and kid-safe

Competitive in price with similar, but harmful, chemicals such as Frontline, Mitam is now working with the US Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the US to prepare for commercial sales expected to start in 2010.

The solution is believed to be effective on a number of ectoparasites that penetrate the outer body of an animal, although the scientific evidence is not yet available, says Cnaani. For now the company of six, based in Katzrin in the Golan Heights and founded in 2003, is focusing on ticks that attack companion and domestic animals such as cows, horses, sheep, goats - and cats and dogs.

One problem with existing methods of tick control, according to Cnaani, is that the materials are poisonous and harm the environment. "The dog is close to the kids and it rubs off," he says.

In addition, he explains: "The ticks develop resistance to it, and eventually it becomes less and less effective. There is room for a solution that is environmentally friendly. We are using something natural."

Proven efficacy in the greenhouse

The fungus being bred by the company has already been shown to be a sound biological control solution in the agriculture business, and is used to keep pests off greenhouse-grown berries.

In the cattle business, beef farmers especially are actively seeking new solutions to save their livestock from cattle tick fever, which leads to anemia and even death in some cases. There are 1.3 billion head of cattle in the world, says Cnaani, and according to experts the overall damage from cattle tick fever is enormous, at $7 billion a year worldwide.

"There is a high cost of treatment, and loss of production," notes Cnaani, pointing out that the EPA is actively seeking new environmental solutions in this direction.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the earliest known writings about alternative medicines, such as acupuncture, date back to 2800 B.C., and the first uses of acupuncture for animals can be traced from 136 to 265 A.D. in China. The earliest versions of animal acupuncture were practiced on large working animals and involved the application of pressure from sharp stones to specific points on the animal’s body.

3 table spoons white vinegar
2 cups warm water
1 camomile tea bag or 1 tablespoon dried camomile flowers in tea ball.
1 table spoon lavender dried flower buds.
1 cup boiling water to steep the dried flowers

Let the dried flowers steep for about ½ hour.

If you did not use tea ball, strain out dried flowers.
Mix the tea solution with the vinegar, and remaining warm water.
Pour onto the dogs coat do not rinse. Vinegar smell will dissipate when the dog drys.

PET 'S SHAMPOO, FRARANCES AND SKIN CONDITIONERS - HOME MADE

Aromatic Dry Shampoo

250 ml (1 cup) cornmeal
250 ml (1 cup) baby/talcum powder
5 ml (1 tsp) rosemary
5 ml (1 tsp) lavender

Combine all of the ingredients in a large, airtight container and let them sit overnight. This will allow the rosemary and lavender to scent the other two ingredients lightly. When ready, sprinkle generously over your dog and brush it into her fur by working your fingers against the lay of her coat. Once it's worked in thoroughly, use your fingers or a hard rubber brush to massage her coat in the direction of the fur but working in circles. Brush until the mixture is completely out of the coat. Your baby will smell great, the powder and cornmeal help absorb excess oil and dirt to clean her, and she won't have had to go through the trauma of having a full bath! How great is that?

Herbal Shampoo

470 ml (2 cups) purified water
10 ml (1 tbsp) rosemary
10 ml (1 tbsp) orange zest
30 ml (2 tbsp) chamomile
10 ml (1 tbsp) lavender oil
120 ml (1/2 cup) baby shampoo

Bring water to a boil, and then remove from heat. Add all of the herbs, cover the dish, and allow it to steep overnight. Strain the mixture and stir in the oils, then gently add the shampoo until well mixed. This shampoo should be kept refrigerated for freshness when not in use, but use about 2 tablespoons every time you wash your dog for a sweet-smelling, great treat for both of you. Don't forget to give her a little massage while you're rubbing it in!

Lemon Flea Dip

3 lemons
940 ml (1 quart) water
60 ml (1/4 cup) baking soda
5 ml (1 tsp) herbal shampoo

Cut the lemons into eighths while bringing the water to a rolling boil. Add the lemons, boil for one hour, then cover and let the mixture steep overnight. Strain the solution then add the remaining ingredients and mix thoroughly. Warm to a tepid temperature before applying. To spoil your pup with the application, dip a sponge into the water and drizzle it slowly over her coat, then use your fingers to work it in using slow, deliberate circles focusing on points like the hips and shoulders. Give her a good massage - she deserves it! This shampoo uses citrus oil to help repel fleas, but the warm water and baking soda also help to soothe any existing irritations she may have.

PET FLEA POWDER

Ingredients:

2 Tbsp Dried ground pennyroyal

2 Tbsp Dried ground fennel

2 Tbsp Cornstarch

Directions:

Mix well; dust your pet with the powder. To get the maximum benefit, rub powder right into the skin.

CLEAN DOG URINE

First, soak up as much of the urine as possible while blotting (not rubbing) the carpet with paper towels. You should start from the area outside of the stain ring and move inward.

Second, rinse the stain with club soda to dilute the urine (or water, but club soda works best) and then repeat the blotting process with clean towels.

Third, when you have determined that most of the dampness is gone, cover the area with baking soda and let it set for at least 2 hours and then vacuum the area to remove all powder.

HANDMADE DOG PAWS SOFTENER - FOR CRACKED PAWS

½ cup olive oil
4 drops sweet orange oil (purchase from health food store)
2 teaspoons freshly cut lemon juice

Mix all ingredients together thoroughly.

Apply softener to nails and pads in a gentle circular motion.
