Canadians Fight Over Allowing Pets On Airplanes

Dr. Thomas Kovesi, a pediatric respirologist at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa said today on Canadian TV "The airlines have to ask themselves which are more important: people or pets? And pets are important, but I think people are more important"

CANADAIAN AIRLINES PET POLICIES

The control airline consumer complaint in Canada is taking into consideration declaring allergies a disability. This might oblige Canada airlines to stop allowing small pets to fly in the passenger cabin with their owners.

All Canadians airlines are required by federal regulation to allow service animals, such as guide dogs, to travel in passenger cabins, but this proposed policy might influence the service dogs as well.

Once again the travel animals by air can be forced  to be done by CARGO flight only!

USDA DISTRIBUTES ORAL RABIES VACCINE IN NEW YORK

WASHINGTON, Aug. 27, 2009--Wildlife Services (WS), a program within the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, will distribute oral rabies vaccine baits beginning on or about August 28 to prevent the spread of raccoon rabies in portions of western and northern New York.

In cooperation with the New York State Department of Health and key agencies, 845,200 oral rabies vaccination (ORV) baits targeting raccoons will be distributed by several methods over a 5,180 square mile area. Over the next two weeks, personnel from WS and its cooperators, along with volunteers, will be hand baiting populated areas by vehicle. Fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters will assist with the distribution of ORV baits over more rural areas.

Additional information concerning the raccoon oral rabies vaccine program, please visit http://www.aphis.usda.gov/wildlife_damage/rabies.shtml or contact WS toll free at 1–866–4–USDA–WS (1–866–487–3297).

YOUR PET AND THE LAW

While you're alive, your dog is, legally, your property. Aside from the restrictions of cruelty laws, you can do almost anything you want with an animal you own: sell it, give it away, or have it humanely destroyed.

DOG LITTER ON BUENOS AIRES STREETS

PETITION
We state our frustration with the high level of dog excrement on the streets of Buenos Aires. We want to see dog owners held responsible for their pet’s litter. Accountability means, we want financial fines to be actively issued by the City of Buenos Aires to dog owners who fail to pick up their dog’s litter. The time has come for Buenos Aires police to be more active in enforcing the rules!

Social Responsibility and Animal Welfare - Veterinarian Seminar

ARCA Brasil

Targeting professionals and students of the Veterinarian field, the seminar brought local and international lecturers to cover how social oriented initiatives can also mean opportunity and promote a professional career. Successful initiatives in Brazil and abroad, that moved society's level of awareness on pet population control and responsible ownership, were also presented.

WHO GETS THE PETS?

In today’s society, pets are viewed legally as property (no different than a table or chair). People however, view animals as their children, their babies, and their companions. Since there aren’t custody arrangements for chairs or tables, there aren’t any for the family pet either. Written agreements over custody or support of the pet are becoming increasingly popular in courtrooms.

The best thing for the couple to do would be to settle the visitation/custody arrangement between each other - if they are unable to do that, pets will be treated as property in the courtroom. It has been reported that couples are willing to drive upwards of 200 miles to visit their pets and pick them up for visitation.

In the past, pets have usually been given to the adult who has custody of the children, but a large number of childless couples are squabbling over their pet turning it into a major issue. In most cases, it is still in the couple’s (and their pet’s) best interest to have it settled out of court.

More and more pets have been named as beneficiaries in wills - this is covered by law. People will make a will if they have a companion animal to make sure that pet is taken care of by a certain person, and money is even set aside specifically for the care of the pet.

This just goes to show you that pets are being perceived differently now than they have been in the past. I don’t think it will be too much longer before the law recognizes pets not only as possessions, but as living things. That they will take them into consideration and pet custody battles will become more common in the courtroom. People take pride in their animals, and when both people become attached, there has to be a fair way to make both people happy.

I know some of you may identify with this story all too well. I am very interested in your comments on this subject - if you have been through something similar, tell me your story, and tell me how you resolved the problem and how everything worked out.
